Project Profile

Cinergy Corporation
Project Overview
Cinergy Corporation is the result of a merger between PSI Energy, Inc., based in Plainield, Indiana and Cincinnati Gas and Electric. Cinergy has utility clients in several states. They operate on an interstate WAN with several thousand PC's and workstations. In Indiana, the GIS data is maintained in the regional offices and a central database is updated daily from those offices. In other areas, Cinergy is now pulling together data from multiple sources to build a GIS database which will conform to their company's standards.

MetaMAP Solutions
Cinergy is using MetaVUE for a large number of their personnel to have live access to their GIS data. Over 200 MetaVUE users on an interstate WAN can access any of the regional databases, as well as the centralized database from their desktop PC. MetaMAP's distributed processing environment allows large numbers of users to share distributed and centralized databases without losing centralized control or bogging down the network or the server.

The GIS data resides on several open VMS Digital VAX's and Alphas and is shared by over 200 MetaVUE and MetaMAP users, using the TCP/IP protocol.

MetaMAP products directly access several pre-existing ISAM databases on Cinergy ervers.

Several remote offices with limited network capabilities were able to have live access to remote GIS databases for the first time with MetaVUE.

A custom user interface has been developed for MetaVUE for use by Cinergy employees. This interface allows non-technical users to have full access to the GIS data. It also allows users to find specific graphic features (poles, circuits, meters, etc.) in a matter of seconds. Because of the user interface, very little training is needed, even for non-technical users.

Using the programming tools provided by MetaMAP, Cinergy is maintaining their layers for the Cincinnati Area Geographic Information System (CAGIS) with MetaMAP. MetaMAP's two way translator works "on-the-fly" over a multi-platform network to extract and populate data from and to the CAGIS Arc/Info database.

MetaMAP is currently being evaluated for a "heads-up digitizing" project using MetaMAP's ability to digitize over digital orthophotos.
