Project Profile American Electric Power Project Overview American Electric Power, based in Columbus, OH supplies electric power to portions of seven states. Their GIS database is distributed to over a dozen locations, and resides on Digital Alpha and VAX hardware tied together with a TCP/IP network. AEP is in the process of installing MetaMAP for their editing workstations on the Windows NT platform. MetaMAP Solutions MetaMAP is used for maintenance of the GIS data. MetaMAP provides a highly efficient method for editing AEP data over a very busy interstate computer network. MetaMAP's distributed processing environment allows large numbers of users to share distributed databases efficiently without losing centralized control. The GIS data resides on several open VMS Digital VAX's and Alphas and is shared by over 75 MetaMAP workstations, using the TCP/IP protocol. Currently all new view and edit GIS workstations being acquired by AEP are MetaMAP and MetaVUE. MetaMAP products directly interface with over 100 pre-existing custom programs residing on a VMS platform. With the extensive custom programming tools provided by MetaMAP, AEP was able to integrate over 10 years of their custom programming with MetaMAP ... in only 90 days. Several remote offices with limited network capabilities were able to have live access to remote GIS databases for the first time with MetaMAP. A customized comprehensive centrally controlled user accounting/user security system was written and implemented by AEP using the convenient programming tools provided with the MetaMAP product. MetaMAP is used to selectively export data for preparation of distribution map boards, for the MIS department's one-call system, and for producing large scale schematic drawings of distribution facilities. A procedure has been developed to do address searches on non-AEP databases (such as TIGER, ETAK, and local municipal GIS systems) to locate parcels on their databases. MetaMAP allows AEP to view and edit data across facet lines on multiple maps, even though their graphic database is not facetized.
