Sacramento, California Police Department using MetaVUE GIS moving map solution
Sacramento, CA -- The Sacramento Police Department Air Operations Unit has installed MetaVUE in their police helicopters, providing a detailed Geographic Information System (GIS) integrated with their on-board global positioning satellite (GPS) system for their pilots and observers.
With MetaVUE, officers can enter the address to which they are being dispatched. Using the GPS, the helicopter's current position and the location of the address are displayed on a computer screen. MetaVUE tells the pilot the direction to take to reach the destination.
Before the destination is reached, a detailed map of the location is displayed. The pilot and the observer have unprecedented access to mapping details such as property lines, rivers, streams, and catch basins. The system can literally put addresses on the parcels, and provide accurate navigation information to a specific address. The map features and database items the community has in their GIS database can be accessed in seconds. Using data produced by local government sources also provides a level of accuracy beyond Federally produced TIGER or similar geographic data.
MetaVUE can also be placed in a "moving map" mode which is useful in chase and surveillance situations. Using the GPS, MetaVUE automatically tracks the aircraft and displays the appropriate maps along the way. The operator can view the computer generated maps and report the exact location of a suspect to ground units using the street names and other information being displayed on the map.
Because of the success of the system, other law enforcement agencies across the country are implementing MetaMAP products for their mobile law enforcement needs. This technology can also be utilized in police cars as well as the office. The system is being used by the Columbus, Ohio and Houston, Texas police departments, and has recently been ordered by the Pasadena, California Police Department.
