Press Release For Immediate Publication June 1, 1999  City of Columbus Chooses MetaMAP for Tree Data Collection Lexington, KY – After careful consideration of other alternatives, the City of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department is using MetaMAP for heads-up digitizing of the geographical placement of the city's "street trees." These are the trees located in the right-of-way next to the city's streets. The City currently has an extensive tree inventory in a non-graphic database accessed by Tree Manager software. MetaMAP has an interactive link to the Tree Manager database. The vector base map data and digital orthophotography are supplied by the Franklin County Auditor. Using MetaMAP, the workstation operator queries the Tree Manager database for a particular tree. MetaMAP then performs an address match to automatically take the user to the tree location. The digital photography, as well as the vector data is then displayed so the operator can locate the tree location. The operator then digitizes the tree location. MetaMAP places a symbol and links it to the appropriate record in the Tree Manager database. Because of the out of box capabilities of MetaMAP, and the customizing already supplied by the Franklin County Auditor, minimal preparation was needed to perform this project. The MetaMAP software and Tree Manager software and data reside on the workstation. The digital orthophotography resides on a city server. The vector base map data reside on the local workstation and are updated quarterly via compact disc. The city and county have the hardware in place to exchange data live. As soon as that link is open to the users, Recreation and Parks, as well as other City of Columbus agencies, will have live access to the Franklin County Auditor's vector database, eliminating the need for the quarterly updates.
